The Stage
By Mariam Elsharkawy
The stars draping themselves on an infinite canvas Shining through navy curtains And stepping into the spotlight As the sun begins to set Their lights dancing To the chirps of crickets Atop strands of grass Swaying in the wind Adding their own musical qualities To the chorus of the night. They all wait in the background As the moon begins to steal the sun’s setting rays Coaxing its own beams of light To shine through the night sky Stroking traces of paint on the tops of trees And illuminating dwindling paths On the dim Earth below. Pouring its beauty into the reflections of lakes Whom say the final goodbye As the sun begins to paint rays of pink and orange Leaving the stars to bow And make their exit And the moon to return its stolen glow Compelling it’s rocky surface to become dormant Waiting for the next night to come.
